Pets are just a big a part of the family as any human member in my opinion.
Our beautiful old kelpie Buffy was for sure.
She was my sanity when my mother and I fought. She'd always be happy to see me, always listen to my problems and never judge, always wanted to play. Always made me smile. Managed to make me laugh.
From the moment we picked her up as a puppy Dad & I were her favourites. I held her in the car on the way home. She'd follow Dad around every day as he moved the sprinklers or potted round tending to the garden. We hand made her a special kennel just for her. Painted a sign to go on the front. How proud we were and how cute it was when she used her pillow like a person would.
Laughed til we cried when she managed to get chew her way into an empty wine cask and get her head stuck. Then there was the 'doh' moment when we'd just given her a bath only to have her run and jump into the muddy dam. And how she loved getting towelled down after a bath. The way she loved squeaky toys, walks and tug of war.
The way that every single day when you came home she'd wait at the corner of the house and follow your car down the driveway, jumping up to see who was in there.
How she'd stick her head in the car door as soon as you opened it to say hello. The way she would just drop the ground with a thud that you thought it had to hurt and roll over just so you would rub her belly.
How she would stalk you when you were swimming in the pool, just waiting for permission so she could go for a swim too. The way she would wait until you said it was okay to come inside and ran straight to her spot. The time we dressed her up in our old clothes and Dad kept finding bits and pieces over the yard for the next sixth months.
Buffy lived to the ripe old age of twelve.
Good for a dog. She was her gorgeous self until my parents had to make the heartbreaking choice. As it turns out she had cancer too. It was for the best. The vet couldn't do anything else for her. Believe me, we tried everything.
It's broken our hearts and I cry as I type this.
Actually, I cry any time I think of her.
At least I know she has gone to doggy heaven and isn't suffering.
Love you always puppy.
